Sociolinguistics article*Language and GendeR

The functions of language, from Roman Jacobson, a disciple of Saussure, the father of structuralism, six, which is related to attitude or intention of the issuer:
Referential function or representative is present in declarative texts, which assert or deny facts. Own this function is the denotation, the indicative and declarative intonation.
Expressive or emotive function, characteristic of the texts related to the subjective world of the issuer. There is a statement of feelings, feelings expression, which is why resources are fundamentally emotional texts exclamatory intonation, the subjunctive, interjections, the type of exclamatory statements, doubtful or wishful.
Appellate or conative function is trying to find a receiver's response, either verbal (as in the case of interrogative sentences) or behavioral (as in the hortatory sentences). Expressive and emphatic intonation is also characteristic of this function, in the case of the imperative. Interrogative intonation, the vocative are forms specific to the appellate function of language.
These three functions are basic.
Jacobson presents other three that are unfolding from previous:
Metalinguistic function, a particular case of the referential function, which is used when we use the linguistic code to explain the code itself.
Aesthetic or poetic function, when the message becomes important both in transmitted and by the way of putting it. These messages seeking beauty and use tools features: the literary language and stylistic devices. While playing with connotative and subjective values is correlated with expressive or emotive function.
Phatic function or contacts, for messages that are investigating whether the message flows properly through the canal and reaches the receiver. Phatic formulas are those that initiate, maintain or end the communication. Phatic function searches through procedures for feed-back or feedback if the message arrives in good condition.
